A couple of sundays ago I took a walk around Melbournes Laneways to view and photograph the street art. Melbourne is pretty much the street art capital of Australia if you believe the hype.
With a myriad of laneways running north to south across the city, and most with street art sanctioned by the council you will find fabulous artworks around every corner no matter how small and narrow the laneway.
Hosiers was a disapointment this time out though, and not with the standard of street art. But with the taggers. Tagging is NOT art. Its not inspiring, attractive or wanted. But when the talentless taggers, simply tag OVER someone elses works of art its disrepectful and sad. All the street artists expect to find with a week or so that there will be new art on top of theirs. But to find childish, scribbles and tags must be very disheartening.
There was about 20 of us in the group and we started at Hosiers, went through Rutledge, over to Caledonian Lane, up to Finlay Lane, back down to Union Lane, finishing at Degraves Street where we sat and enjoyed lunch amid the buskers. I’ll be doing it again in a few months when I take an interstate friend and fellow photographer on a street art walk so she can photograph them. Hopefully the taggers will be back in Kindergarten and the art will be the focus again.
