Werribee Open Range Zoo

The Young Lions

Werribee Open Range Zoo is set on approx 560 acres within the Werribee Park Precinct in K Road Werribee.   Its neighbours in the Werribee Park Precinct, are the historic Werribee Mansion and the Victorian State Rose Garden.

The zoo is modelled on an african theme and is home to gorilla’s, Hippo’s, Rhino’s, Camels, American Bison, Przwalski’s horse, several varieties of antelope as well as monkeys, painted dogs, giraffes and cheetahs.  As part of the entry fee you can take a free bus ride through the savannah lands… but this day, along with around 25 fellow photographers from the Victorian Photographers Collective we took the off road safari for an additional fee.

Yakini, the dominant male Western Lowland Gorilla

For a very reasonable $50 we went off road in the savannah over ninety minutes, stopping at each animal group for up close and personal photos.  I’m spoilt now and can see myself ever doing the big free bus again. Once off the bus we met up again for lunch, then wandered off in different directions to get some more shots before heading home.  Fabulous day with with lovely company!

After our Europe tour we need to go to the Kruger Park in Africa GF, once seeing these animals totally in the open you will not ever like seeing them in a zoo again. Hey maybe 2020 🙂
